Ski season from Las Vegas: getting ready for Lee Canyon

How Las Vegas skiers get ready for Lee Canyon: pre-season conditioning, altitude and hydration basics, and how the GIOSTAR Recovery Membership fits in.

Las Vegas is a surprising place to ski. Lee Canyon, about an hour up the road in the Spring Mountains, opens when the desert is still in sweatshirts, and plenty of valley residents make it a regular winter outing.

That mix of desert living and mountain days is worth planning for. This article covers how people commonly get ready for the season, what altitude and hydration mean on the mountain, and how the GIOSTAR Recovery Membership fits for adults who ski. It is general information. A provider diagnoses injuries, and new or sharp pain should be checked by a doctor first.

Pre-season conditioning for Lee Canyon skiers

Skiing asks for strong legs, a steady core and decent balance, and most of us do not use those the same way in an office chair. Skiers who plan ahead often start a few weeks before opening day.

  • Legs. Squats, lunges and step-ups build the muscles you use to hold a turn.
  • Core. Planks and rotational work help you stay centered on uneven snow.
  • Balance. Single-leg stands and a wobble board prepare ankles and knees.
  • Cardio. Stairs, a bike or trail runs at Red Rock make a long day less tiring.

Ski shops, instructors and your own provider can fit this to you. A first-day lesson is a common way to remember technique.

Altitude and hydration for a Lee Canyon day

The base area at Lee Canyon is well above Las Vegas, and most people notice the thinner air on a first visit. Cold, dry mountain air also pulls moisture from you through breathing, so water matters even when you do not feel hot.

Basics many skiers follow include drinking water through the day, eating a real breakfast, taking breaks before you are tired and pacing the first runs. Most falls and tweaks happen late in the day when legs are spent, and ending a day early is a plain, free habit. If you have a heart, lung or other health concern, ask your provider about altitude before you go.

When to see a provider about a skiing injury

A hard fall, a knee that gives way, sharp pain, quick swelling or a joint that will not take weight all call for a provider. Ask a doctor first, since a provider can examine you and tell you what is going on and what a return to activity looks like for you.

GIOSTAR helps active adults build a supervised routine alongside their own provider's guidance.

How the Recovery Membership supports skiers at GIOSTAR

The Recovery Membership is GIOSTAR's plan for people who keep their weeks full of movement, and ski season is one of those stretches. It includes monthly IV infusion credits, a discount on additional IVs and biomarker testing, at our Henderson wellness center. Read more on the sports injury and recovery page.

The IV menu includes the Hydration IV, a balanced mix of fluids and electrolytes, and the Performance & Recovery IV, made with amino acids and electrolytes and built for active people. Your nurse practitioner chooses with you based on your history and calendar. See the full menu on the IV therapy page, and read what IV therapy is and what a session involves for how a visit runs.

What a Recovery Membership visit looks like in Henderson

You start with a free initial visit with a nurse practitioner, who reviews your health history, your goals and a personalized plan. Labs may be recommended. The Diagnostic Lab Panel measures 100+ biomarkers from one morning draw at a Quest location, with results in about a week, and every marker is reviewed with you by a nurse practitioner.

Infusion visits happen at the center. A licensed professional places a small IV and you sit in a recliner for the length of the drip, so many members book a visit around a weekday morning before heading up the mountain.

If you compete in a tested sport, check with your governing body before any treatment.

Ski season and the Recovery Membership in Las Vegas

A ski season is a series of days, and the ones that go well usually have something in common: planning, pacing and a provider you can call. The Recovery Membership adds a steady, supervised routine to that plan. Other ways the valley keeps people moving are covered in hiking Red Rock and the Spring Mountains.

What to pack and plan for a Lee Canyon ski day

A little planning on the practical side helps. Dress in layers, since the desert drive down can be warm and the base area is cold. Pack water and a real lunch, sunscreen and goggles, because sun at altitude is strong. Check road and lift conditions before you leave, and give yourself time for the drive, which can slow in winter weather.

Plan the day too. Warm up with a few easy runs before the steeper ones, take breaks before you are tired, and agree on a meeting point if you ski in a group. Stopping when your legs are spent is the oldest habit in skiing, and it is still the best one. It is how people who ski the Spring Mountains keep a long season going.
