How semaglutide fits a medical weight loss program

Where semaglutide fits in a GIOSTAR medical weight loss program in Henderson, who decides, and how labs and body composition checks work.

Most people who type "semaglutide Las Vegas" into a search bar want to know the same few things. What is it, who is allowed to prescribe it, and what else comes with it? This article answers those for the GIOSTAR Medical Weight Loss Program in Henderson. For the program itself, see medical weight loss in Las Vegas.

The short version: semaglutide is a prescription medication. A provider decides when it is medically appropriate, and at GIOSTAR it is one part of a supervised program that includes lab testing, provider consultations, body composition monitoring, and nutrition and lifestyle support.

What semaglutide is and how a weekly injection works

Semaglutide is a prescription medication in the class called GLP-1 medicines. You give yourself one injection a week at home, and your nurse practitioner trains you on it at our Henderson wellness center.

Your provider sets each dose step at a monthly visit, based on how you are tolerating the last one.

Who prescribes semaglutide in a GIOSTAR program

A nurse practitioner does, only when it is medically appropriate for you. That means a real review first: your weight history, past attempts, your medications and supplements, other health conditions, and any plans for pregnancy or surgery. Dr. Ryan Peterson, our Medical Director, oversees care.

Some adults are not good candidates. If that is you, or if another option would suit you better, our team says so at your visit. Nobody should leave a first appointment with a prescription that was not chosen for them.

Labs before and during a semaglutide program

Bloodwork comes before a prescription, so your provider starts from your own numbers. The Diagnostic Lab Panel covers hormone, metabolic and biomarker markers, more than 100 in all. You book one morning draw at a Quest location near you, and results arrive in about a week. Your nurse practitioner reviews every marker with you.

Metabolic markers such as blood sugar are part of what your provider looks at, along with thyroid markers and lipids. Labs also give you a baseline to compare against later. If you have not prepared for a draw before, our guide on how to prepare for a blood test covers fasting, water and medications.

What the monthly semaglutide check-ins track

Monthly visits are the center of the program. Each one covers:

  • How you handled your last dose or dose step.
  • Body composition monitoring, so your provider sees more than a number on a scale.
  • Side effects and appetite, including nausea, which is common with GLP-1 medicines after a dose change.
  • Nutrition and lifestyle support, with a coaching add-on available if you want one-on-one help with meals and daily protein.

Smaller meals and slower eating help many people with nausea. Call 702.703.5393 right away for severe belly pain or vomiting that leaves you dehydrated. Questions about a dose? Call us at the same number.

Comparing a Las Vegas semaglutide program with others

A medication name is not a program. When you compare options in the valley, ask these five questions:

  1. Who prescribes, and what is their license?
  2. Which labs come first, and who reviews them with you?
  3. How often are you seen?
  4. How is body composition tracked?
  5. What is the plan when you stop?

Your nurse practitioner answers all five before you start. For a wider view of the other medication a provider may choose, see tirzepatide and how a GIOSTAR program uses it, and for the whole program in order, read how medical weight loss works.

Questions to ask about semaglutide before you start

Walk into your first visit with a list. Ask how the injection is taught and where you practice it. Ask what happens if nausea lasts longer than you expected, and who you call after hours. Ask how your dose is stepped, and how you will know when to stay at a level instead of moving up.

Ask, too, what the plan looks like when you reach a point where you want to stop. Your provider plans any step down with you, and goes through the eating and strength habits you carry forward. At GIOSTAR, the monthly visits, the labs and the planned step down are all part of the program.

Eating and activity alongside a semaglutide plan

A medication is only one part of a plan. Nutrition and lifestyle support is there for the weeks when a plan needs more than a medication. It is included in the GIOSTAR program, and the coaching add-on gives you one-on-one sessions for meal planning and a daily protein target. In Las Vegas, movement is easy to fold in: a morning walk before the heat, a swim, a Saturday hike near Red Rock or a few laps around Lake Las Vegas. Your provider talks through activity with you, based on your history.
